In the spring of 2022, VW Norway and Try gave our neighbors from Sinsen Sentral, Stian Korntvedt Ruud and Martin Gautron, a very special assignment. Volkswagens commercial vehicles is officially known as Norway’s most popular workplace on 5 wheels, and Stian& Martin were commissioned to make the world’s first drivable office chair, with a lot of the technological features from their cars.

We followed Stian and Martin through the process, and this is our (OiOiOi)directors cut.

Every year, the Norwegian Cancer Society launches a new star to benefit cancer research and light a spark of hope for Norwegian cancer patients called "Stjerneaksjonen".  At Christmas, thousands of these stars are placed in Norwegian hospitals, nursing homes and private residents. All the proceeds go to cancer research and aid.

For their 10th anniversary in 2022,  Snøhetta got the assignment of designing the stars. We followed their design team and their process and provided stills for promotion.  The project has received attention in numerous publications around the world, and we are very proud and humble to contribute.

The notion of a star

Swedish lamp-manufacturer Atelje Lyktan and Snøhetta challenged us to make a movie about their re-design of the classic "Supertube", the "Superdupertube", without showing the actual product. We accepted and went to their hometown, and met up with Inge and Jørgen to capture the word on the streets of Åhus, Sweden.

A little peek inside

On 11 December 2021, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert was held at Oslo Concert Hall in Oslo to celebrate the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize 2021. Following the pandemic induced cancellation last year, this year’s event was relaunched in a completely new fashion, with a new stage setup designed by Snøhetta.

OiOiOi documented Snøhetta’s stage design through a video capturing the preparation for musical suites by the Oslo Philharmonic symphony orchestra and the elegant movements of masked dancers. The film further features the stage design’s play with light, and the contrast between darkness, rhythm and movement. The relationship between the magnitude of the Oslo Concert Hall’s main space and the performers on stage is further explored and provides room for reflection.

As an additional dimension, the film explores the anticipation that lies inherent in an empty concert hall right before the strings position their arches and the audience takes its seats.

The Peace Prize Concert

Common Sands is a collaborative research project between Studio Plastique, Snøhetta and Italian ceramic tile manufacturer Fornace Brioni. The project explores potential applications of recycled e-waste glass, while bringing awareness to the growing global glass shortages. The project won Dezeen’s “Sustainable design of the year” award in 2021.

OiOiOi has documented the project development from its inception. Through the lens of OiOiOi, Common Sands explores the translucent nature of the e-waste mix and its applications. Through experimentation with light and transparency, the images uncover the beauty that lies inherent in this repurposed material that is typically regarded as waste. 

In this project, OiOiOi was able to follow the magical development from opaque sand to something translucent, from waste materials and back to upcycled products with new applications. This has helped build a visual narrative that puts an underexplored waste stream into a new light. 

The volume of electronic waste from discarded electronic devices is growing rapidly across the planet. Common Sands aims to address the issue with short lifespans of these devices and insufficient recycling opportunities – and to bring new life to otherwise unwanted materials.

Glass is made from high-quality industrial sand, or silica sand – a material that is in rapid decline due to its limited available volumes combined with extreme demand. The project plays with light, scale, depth and tactility, and has provided an open playing field for OiOiOi’s creative storytelling development.

Common Sands - Forite

Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus – the entire underground network of the fungal system. Through developing new meat alternatives, new bio-composites and new protein sources based on the untapped potential of mycelium, Norwegian company NoMy seeks to contribute to a more sustainable global food production.

OiOiOi has delved into the ground to document this hidden underworld of the root-like filaments of fungi, to visualize something that is never really available for humans to see. In this project, OiOiOi captures the living fungi organisms – how they grow, reproduce and develop. And in turn how humans can manipulate this process by dehydrating the fungi, terminating growth and putting the mycelium into production to be transformed to edible delicacies.

Contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future

Mycelium

As the most widely used building material in the world, concrete plays a significant role in the carbon footprint of the building and construction industry. Norwegian startup Saferock along with Snøhetta aim to produce fully CO2 neutral concrete by employing byproducts from the mining industry. OiOiOi has documented the project through video and photography, to be used on Saferock’s website and visual profile.

The visual documentation displays the contrast between the enormous scale of the residual land masses, and the microscopic components of the geopolymer concrete. When zooming into the matter, one understands why these inorganic polymers are known as "artificial rocks".

In this project, OiOiOi has had the opportunity to follow the project from its very inception. This has allowed the team to uncover untold stories about material resources, landfills, minerals and sites in Norway that have never been showcased in this way before.

By truly absorbing the enormity of the project’s ambition and the subtlety of the material’s inherent characteristics, OiOiOi has helped bring awareness to an initiative that could have significant impact on global construction processes. 


Saferock

Building the future with carbon neutral concrete

For two years, OiOiOi followed a research project in which Snøhetta explored plastic as a material, its journey and footprint in the value chain, as well as its inherent qualities. The aim of the project was to shift the public’s attitude towards used plastic, from regarding it as waste to seeing it as a valuable resource. The project resulted in the development of the S-1500 chair, a revamp of an industrial icon by Norwegian modernist Bendt Winge’s classic R-48 chair from the late sixties. Both are produced by Nordic Comfort Products (NCP) at Hemnesberget in the north of Norway.

OiOiOi’s contribution to the project lies in capturing the simplicity and mystique of one of the most widely used and disputed materials in the world today. Through its thorough documentation, spanning from factory and workshop visits to close-up portrait imagery, the project further aims to inspire the many circular journeys that a material with unique and often non-substitutable qualities can take if one lets one’s imagination run free.


The project received support from the Design-Driven Innovation Program (DIP), led by Design and Architecture Norway (DOGA) in cooperation with the Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway. Both Plast and S-1500 were featured in a wide number of internationally acclaimed design and news publications spanning from Fast Company and Dezeen to Corriere della Sera and the New York Times.

With over 1.500 works, the Selvaag Art Collection is one of Norway's largest private art collections. In a film project entitled “Artists talks”, OiOiOi developed short film interviews with selected artists, including Norwegian sculptor Elena Engelsen and American contemporary artists Doug Aitken and Paul McCarthy among others.

The films portray the artists in their natural habitats – their ateliers, showcasing the artists as they talk about their respective journeys surrounded by their works. The films aim to display the artists’ stories through intimate interviews and close-ups, the use of natural light, a focus on tactility in their works and the use of natural colors.
